Home Trends Designers Are Ready to Ditch in 2020

Not to freak you out or anything, but the new year is just a few short months away. Sure, it’s easy to feel a little anxious as 2020 creeps closer and closer, but it’s also a great time to infuse a “new year, new you” mentality into every facet of your life. Yes, including your interior design. 

We love keeping up with the biggest design trends as much as the next person, but all fads have an expiration date. For some of 2019’s biggest trends, it’s coming sooner than you’d think.

Make no mistake, beauty is in the eye of the beholder—and interior design is no exception. Ultimately, your home should be a reflection of you, not the biggest trends. However, if you want to keep your crib feeling current, here are the five trends to ditch come the new year:

1. Bye Bye Brass

Brass tones hit the scene several years ago, replacing the popular nickel finish that dominated for so long. But we feel like its time has also come to make way for something new. It has also been wildly overused and now feels trendy as opposed to special." —Kendall Wilkinson, interior designer 

2. Part Ways With Palm

“I love palm print, I really do. I’d live at the Greenbrier or Beverly Hills Hotel and relish the palm wallpaper. However, knock-off prints seem to be everywhere. 3. No More Millennial Pink

4. Thank You, Next, Neutrals

5. Say Au Revoir to Accent Walls 

One home trend that is out for 2020 is accent walls. These accent walls were once popular because it added a splash of color or drama, but now they give off an unfinished and non-cohesive aesthetic to the space due to the contrast of inconsistencies. It is better to use a nice wallcovering throughout the space or leave all the walls and trim painted the same color. This will create a much better impact by creating a cohesive and balanced backdrop for furniture and decor.” — Nina Magon, founder and principal of Contour Interior Design
